How do email solicitations/spam know what city I'm in?

I recently opened a few spam emails and to my surprise they had my city in which I live in listed. I have had no prior experiences with these companies. I am curious how they know where I live. Also can I control this intrusion?

How do email solicitations/spam know what city I'm in?
One of the many ways spamers get your email address is through web sites that require you to give personal information when you sign up for things, like newsletters, memberships, free gifts, free offers, etc.

Web sites often share information with advertisers and other web sites. Some even sell their email address lists.

So, I'd have to say, at one time or another you signed up for something that not only required you to give your email address, but your city as well.

It's a good idea to read "privacy statements" before signing up for things.

Reply:Well, you committed the first error of email. You opened mail from someone you don't know, which triggers a notice back to them, sending your actual email id and address. Now you get more spam. All experts agree: Never open spam; never respond; never unsubscribe.

If you didn't ask for it and you don't know who it's from, it goes in spam, UNOPENED!!!
